In the 1950s, Betty worked in the Hawkes' Bay Art Gallery and Museum, then window-dressing and signwriting before marriage and family duties. During this time, involvement in various handcrafts, including some years with pottery kept her artistic instincts ticking over.
A tertiary Graphic Design course in 1984-5 (Honours pass) began the path that led to her present life as an artist.
After moving to Nelson in 1989, a year of face-painting in 1990 led to discovering the ability to do Portraiture, which in turn opened the way to Fantasy Painting, Animal Portraiture and Landscapes.
Painting is now a passion with still occasional facepainting at parties and events.
I love to pass on my enjoyment of Nature and the landscape I live in through my paintings

Loving Spirits
This lovely study of a mare and her foal was a major piece in a 2009 exhibition called 'Free Spirits' which focused entirely on horses.
Their nature, their power, and the sense of freedom expressed as they gallop or cavort together.
The study was created from photos supplied by Kay Hood of Hedwood Horses Ltd, Christchurch. I am very grateful to Kay for her help and support in providing me with a wonderful selection of photos of their horses.
I thought it would be an interesting challenge to create a painting for this auspicious and very lucky sign in the Chinese Zodiac.
There are 5 elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water - associated with each of the 12 signs of the Chinese Zodiac. This year, 2012, it is the Water Dragon.
I brought in elements of water and a new moon because the years come in on the new moon. I created my own dragon but based it on traditional Chinese designs. A very enjoyable project.
